Downtown Baldwin City will be closed to traffic for the Thunder on the Bricks car show.

Thunder on the Bricks Car Show

Saturday, May 6 from 10am to 4pm.

Only cars participating in the car show will be allowed to park in the designated areas on High Street from 7th to 9th and on 8th Street from High St. to Grove. Limited parking for everyone else will be available along High St., on 6th Street, and on 7th Street, both north and south of High Street. Beyond that, you may park in the neighborhoods and possibly a few spots in the lot behind the Methodist Church on Grove between 7th and 8th Streets. Plan your day knowing you will have to walk to the shop, not park right outside our door.

Quilters' Paradise will be open on Saturdays from 10am to 5pm through the end of May during the All Kansas & Nebraska Shop Hop, as well as AKNSH Sunday Shop Day on May 21 from noon-4pm.

Summer Classes


Join Sharon to learn the basics of hand applique. This class will focus on leaves and stems, making sharp points and nice curves. Class will be held at the Lumberyard Arts Center on Wed., May 10 from 1-3pm. Cost: $ 35.00

The traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts are made using the English Paper Piecing or EPP technique. Sharon will teach you the basics of basting your fabric to the templates and then stitching the parts together. There are a variety of template shapes available to make different designs. Be prepared to become addicted! Class will be held at the Lumberyard Arts Center on Wed., May 24 from 1-3pm. Cost: $35.00

Using just two fabrics, make this stunning kaleidoscope quilt using the Prism blue border print from In the Beginning Fabrics and a white background. Designed by Jason Yenter, the way the octagons are cut from the border fabric, the lattice look is part of the blocks! Sharon will guide you through the cutting and piecing steps to get you launched on this great pattern. Class to be held at the Lumberyard Arts Center on Wed., June 7 from 10am to 3pm. Cost: $ 40.00

Take your One Block Wonder skills and give them a twist with Liz as she guides you through making a Hexified Panel Quilt! Using 7 identical panels, cut six into strips and then into sets of 60 degree triangles, and then build your color-flow of hexagons around the 7th uncut panel. Two-day class to be held at the Lumberyard Arts Center on Wednesdays, June 21 & 28 from 10am to 3pm. Cost: $ 60.00


Create your own Fabric Landscape Art Piece with Kathleen Thomas. Saturday, July 22 from 9am to noon at the Lumberyard Arts Center. Cost: $ 45.00

 


Create your very own PJ bottoms as an introduction to sewing! Youth class: 9th Grade - 12th Grade Wed., June 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Lumberyard Arts Center. Cost: $ 30.00

Design and sew a scrappy bag using fabric scraps! No previous sewing skills required! Youth class for those from 6th grade to 12th grade. Two-day class: Mon & Tues, July 10 & 11 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Lumberyard Arts Center. Cost: $ 20.00

Sewing is so Fun! is a series of three classes for youths from 5th grade to 8th grade. Create a sports bag, pet scarf, and pillow case as you learn the art of sewing. Pillowcase--June 6, Sports Bag--June 13, Pet Scarf--June 20, all from 1:00 to 3:00pm at the Lumberyard Arts Center. **If you wish to register for only one or two classes, please do so individually on their respective class postings below.**  Cost: $ 45.00

Quilting/Textile Open Studio
Every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm
Plus, first Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm
Lumberyard Arts Center

Free Open Studio for Textile Arts at the Lumberyard Arts Center from 10am to 3pm on Wednesdays, plus an evening session on first Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm. The studio will be open to anyone wanting to work on quilting/sewing/textile/needlework projects. This time offers a great opportunity to finish up UFOs, get answers to questions about patterns, or just come enjoy stitching with friends. Sewing with friends is always more fun!


The biennial Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival will be held June 15-17, 2023 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

In addition to the showcase of quilts made by members of the 14 sponsoring guilds, the judged quilts, and the multiple vendors, there will also be three special collection exhibits featuring quilts made by Lea McComas, Luke Haynes, and the Triplett Sisters Block of the Month participants. Check out the wide variety of technique classes being taught by regional and nationally known instructors. Come for one day, two days, or even all three days! Single day tickets will be available for purchase at the door during the festival.

PLEASE NOTE: Overland Park Convention Center will only accept cashless payments starting January 2023. This includes the OPCC food vendors during the festival. However, please bring your cash to buy tickets for the guild Opportunity Quilts on display outside the Vendor Exhibit Hall and for the many vendors who will accept cash/check/card payments.


Douglas County (KS) Free Fair

One Great County -- One Great Fair

July 24-29, 2023

It's not too early to think about entering your quilts in the upcoming county fair! Plan now to have your quilts ready to enter on Monday, July 24 from 2:00 to 6:00pm in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Judging will take place Tuesday morning, followed by hanging of the quilts. The exhibit buildings will open to the public Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 to 9:00pm and be open from 10:00am to 9:00pm Wednesday through Saturday. All exhibits are released on Sunday morning between 8:00 and 10:00am.

Go to the Douglas County Fair website, scroll down to Fair Info and click on Learn More to download the Fair Book. You'll find the Quilts Open Class listings beginning on page 91. One quilt per category per person. However, if you have multiple quilts you'd like to enter, see if they will fit in different categories! We look forward to seeing your quilts!
