One Block Wonder Cubed!
Add 3D cubes to your One Block Wonder quilts for a whole new look! OBWs are actually quite easy to make and each one is completely unique. Six repeats of one fabric are cut into strips and subcut into sets of six 60 degree triangles. Add triangles in three values of a color to create 3D cubes to break up and enhance your overall design. Despite being a quilt full of hexagons, the assembly directions for an OBW use NO Y-seams! Tumbling into Spring is an example of adding cubes in various colors pulled from the original print. .
Select a fabric with a medium scale design for your Cubed OBW, plus choose 2-3 colors from your print to get 3 different values of each color in solid or tone-on-tone to create your cubes. Try to have a mottled or tone-on-tone background in your main fabric between the designs so no hexies are just plain fabric. Asian and floral designs work very well; however, don't limit yourself--think outside the box for something unique. Quilters' Paradise has a wide variety of suitable fabrics. Look for color and scale as whatever design you choose will disappear as you cut your strips & triangle sets for reassembly. You must have a minimum of 6 repeats of your fabric--many are 24" repeats marked by the repeat of the printing in the selvedge. Adding extra fabric to use for a border or on the back is fun to show the transformation from original fabric to OBW! If you'd like to start with a smaller project, you may select either a smaller fabric repeat of an 8" or 12" repeat or use six repeats of just half-width of the fabric for a smaller project. Class will be held at the Lumberyard Arts Center classroom/studio, around the corner from Quilters' Paradise.
We will begin by layering and cutting your 6 repeats into strips and then triangle sets. Learning Liz's chain-piecing technique to make sewing the hexies together easier and faster. Play with layout ideas and see how the pieces come together in final construction. A full day filled with creativity!

Having made over 60 of these quilts based on 60 degree triangles, you'll get the benefit of her knowledge and experience in making your own OBW quilts. |
