Skill Building: Free Motion Practice Panel with Liz Granberg-Jerome

After taking Liz's Scared Stitchless to Free Motion Quilt, you're ready to move on to the next step and start practicing more designs to use on your quilts. The RGA Design-Practice Panels Skillbuilder 1 is designed to do just that! It's a pre-printed panel that includes many free motion designs that, when stitched over, can help you practice to build that muscle-memory necessary to recreate it without drawing as you become more comfortable with the designs. Class fee of $58 includes preprinted practice panel.
Saturday, August 19 from 10:00am to 3:00pm, Lumberyard Arts Center
Supply List: Things you will need for class.
- RGA Design-Practice Panel Skillbuilder I (from Quilters' Paradise)
- Batting and backing to fit 36x45" panel
- Roll of Blue Tape or Packing Tape
- Sewing Machine in good working order (with instruction manual). Must have a plexiglas surround for your machine (e.g., Sew-Steady table) or a small surround that comes with some machines. You must have room for your hands on both sides of the needle to move the quilt under the needle.
- Free motion quilting foot or darning foot for machine and the ability to drop or cover the feed-dogs. If unsure, bring all of the feet for your machine. No walking foot please.
- Basic notions including small scissors or snips, seam ripper, pins, etc.
- 1 pkg. Schmetz Microtex or Quilting machine needles size 70, 75 or 80 (a variety pack is great)
- #1 Curved safety pins, 2 dozen or more
- Threads for stitching: Variegated thread or something bright and contrasting to the black on white printed panel.
- Your choice of something to give your fingers traction as you move the fabric sandwich under the needle. Suggestions include Machingers or Grabaroos quilting gloves, garden gloves with rubber nubs on fingertips, finger cots. A non-greasy lotion with glycerin (Neutrogena makes several options) also gives nice traction when quilting.
Recommended Battings: Quilter’s Dream Cotton, Warm and Natural, Warm and White, Hobbs 80/20 blend.
Quilting and textile art classes are co-sponsored by Quilters' Paradise and the Lumberyard Arts Center as part of the Quilt Capital of Kansas programming.
