One Block Wonder Art Quilts
One Block Wonder quilts look complicated, but are actually quite easy to make and each one is completely unique! Six repeats of one fabric are cut into strips and subcut into sets of six 60 degree triangles. Despite being a quilt full of hexagons, the assembly directions for an OBW use NO Y-seams! The sample shown was made of fabric with peacocks displaying their tail feathers against a dark mottled sky and created a marvelous mosaic of blues and greens.

Select a fabric with a medium to large scale design for your first OBW. Try to have a mottled or tone-on-tone background between the designs so no hexies are just plain fabric. Asian and floral designs work very well. Quilters' Paradise has a wide variety of suitable fabrics. Look for color and scale as whatever design you choose will disappear as you cut your strips & triangle sets for reassembly. You must have at least 6 repeats of your fabric--many are 24" repeats marked by the repeat of the printing in the selvedge. Adding extra fabric to use for a border or on the back is fun to show the transformation from original fabric to OBW! If you'd like to start with a smaller project, you may select either a smaller fabric repeat of an 8" or 12" repeat or use just half-width of the fabric for a smaller project. Begin by layering and cutting your 6 repeats into strips and then triangle sets. Learning Liz's chain-piecing technique to make sewing the hexies together easier and faster. Play with layout ideas and see how the pieces come together in final construction. A full day filled with creativity!
Supply list:
Six (6) repeats of a medium size print with plenty of color and movement. Background should have movement as well--keep solid color areas to a minimum. Suggested to get 1/4 to 1/2 yard more than needed to allow plenty for pattern matching of layers.
Six repeats of 24" design = ~4 yards
Six repeats of 18" design = ~3 yards
Six repeats of 12" design = ~2 yards
What to bring to class:
Sewing machine in good working order (with manual & accessories)
1/4" sewing machine foot (if you have one)
Flat-head flower pins (~12 is plenty)
Straight pins (~100+)
Seam roller
Acrylic ruler 6.5x24" or similar
Rotary cutter with fresh blade
Basic sewing notions--thread, scissors/snips, seam ripper, etc.
Recommended:
GDQ-5.5" 60 degree triangle ruler with pointed tip (available at Quilters' Paradise)
