Beginning Quilting--Making the Blocks



If you have always admired quilts and wished you could make one, this is the class for you! This series of six classes will teach you the basics to become a quilter. Teacher Liz Granberg-Jerome will provide a general overview of machine quilting with informative handouts to use for reference as she guides you in hands-on instruction of rotary cutting and basic machine piecing. You will made a minimum of six blocks by the end of the series, plus optional bonus blocks to create a sampler quilt of up to 12 different blocks. This series includes many tips, tricks, and plenty of time for Q&A. See below for class topics.

Fabric Requirements:
Quilters' Paradise offers a wide variety of fabrics to make every quilt suit the personality of the maker! Choose your own color combination prior to the first class, please. 

To make the 12-block sampler as shown (additional fabric may be required to make bonus blocks):
Color 1 Focus (blue): 1 3/4 yards, includes border as shown
Color 2 Background (cream): 1 yard
Color 3 Compliment (red): 3/4 yard
Color 4 Compliment (optional): 1/2 yard
Color 5 Neutral (sand): 1/2 yard for sashing strips (may be same as background)

Supply list:

Rotary cutter and self-healing mat
Acrylic rulers recommend: 6 x 24", 6 1/2" square, and 12 1/2" square
Sewing scissors/snips
Pins and pincushion or container
Seam ripper
Neutral sewing thread to blend with fabric
Sewing machine (bring instruction book and accessories)
Quarter inch foot for sewing machine (if you have one)


Six Session Topics:
Class 1 will cover safe and accurate rotary cutting, and sewing an accurate scant 1/4" seam. You will start with simple straight pieced blocks to build your skills cutting and stitching units together. 

Class 2 will add half-square triangle units.

Class 3 will add quarter-square triangle or hour-glass units.

Class 4 will add flying geese units.

Class 5 will add a Dresden plate applique block.

Class 6 will add curved piecing with the Drunkard's Path block.

Final class will include discussion of layout options to completed your quilt.
Watch for Beginning Quilting 102 in the fall for more in-depth instruction in complete top construction including adding sashings & cornerstones, alternate block or diagonal layouts, and adding borders.

Skill Details: Aimed at beginning quilters just starting out or quilters who may want a review to build their skills.
Materials Included: Use of cutting mats, irons and ironing boards available during class.
Requirements: Basic knowledge of your sewing machine and a willing attitude.

Instructor Bio: Liz Granberg-Jerome brings 10+ years of quilting experience, on top of 50+ years of sewing to the classroom. She works well with all levels of students, working with each student to ensure everyone in her class succeeds.
